Abstract
This project centers on insects, integrating classical literature, artistic interpretation, and modern entomology to curate an interdisciplinary exhibition. By comparing historical texts and artworks with contemporary scientific knowledge, the project translates insect morphology, ecology, and behavior into accessible visual and narrative content.The exhibition follows a thematic narrative structure—domestic spaces, rural landscapes, wetlands, forest environments, and scientific illustration—guiding audiences from everyday experiences toward a broader understanding of biodiversity.Through academic review, visual translation, and docent training, the project establishes a cycle of research, education, and public engagement.
Methodology and Implementation Steps
This project is led by a student team organized into specialized groups responsible for concept development, academic review, event design, and external resource coordination.
Innovation and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
External experts were invited to enhance docents’ interpretive and communication skills. The exhibition incorporated fables to introduce insects to children, while a Japanese koto performance was used to simulate insect sounds, enabling audiences to explore biodiversity through multisensory experiences.
Expected Results and Contributions
The exhibition attracted over 7,000 visitors, received coverage from 14 media outlets, and reached more than 200,000 people through social media. The project was recognized by the USR Lecture Program and the Cross-Field Project. Through intensive discussions and structured training, 49 hours of docent education were provided, cultivating student docents from both high school and university levels. Each docent developed a distinctive interpretive style within a cross-disciplinary framework. The project proposes a three-stage model—Narrative Structure, Scientific Validation, and Public Interpretation—which may serve as a reference for biodiversity education in higher education.
