Presentation Topic
Reading the River, Working with Nature: From Disaster Risk Management to Ecological Self-Recovery through NbS
Su-Chin Chen |Distinguished Professor, NCHU
As extreme rainfall triggers compound hazards, highly engineered rivers face ecological degradation. How can we strike a new balance between disaster reduction and conservation? This presentation begins with “reading the river”, moving from controlling disasters toward building resilience by working with nature. Drawing on Taiwan’s Nature-based Solutions (NbS) experience, it explores maintaining essential safety while giving water space and nature time to recover. When engineering secures safety and NbS creates space, we build a resilient Taiwan that can live with water and thrive with nature.
Presentation Topic
Eavesdropping on agriculture: Machine learning approaches for scalable biodiversity monitoring and improved nature-based outcomes
Callan Alexander Ph.D.|Queensland University of Technology
International standards for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) emphasise the need for baseline biodiversity data, which is often missing or costly. This evidence gap and potential unintended consequences hinder NbS adoption by decision-makers. This presentation explores how passive acoustic monitoring and machine learning bridge this gap, improving spatial and temporal monitoring for vocal fauna. Drawing on case studies across the cotton, viticulture, and cattle industries, we explore hybrid, human-in-the-loop machine learning to obtain reliable, cost-effective data, leveraging it for improved NbS outcomes.

Cross Discipline Forum
