When the City Meets Green: Protecting Campus Ecology

Abstract

The Society of Wildlife and Nature club at NCHU is dedicated to promoting biodiversity within urban campuses. Through the project “When the City Meets Green: Protecting Campus Ecology,” the team carries out initiatives such as ecological tours, species surveys, water quality testing, and Glass collisions prevention, aiming to raise awareness among students and the public. Using Citizen Science platforms, the society documents campus species and builds survey databases for water quality and invasive species in NCHU Lake and Luchuan Canal. With the support of cross-disciplinary collaborations, general courses, and online exhibitions, it deepens the spread of ecological knowledge. The team promoting “no feeding” campaigns and monitoring invasive fish species also produces preserved specimens of invasive species to enhance educational value. Through activities such as bird surveys, plant identification, and nighttime wildlife observations, they inspire students’ passion for nature and motivate them to take action. Moving forward, the team will continue to strengthen monitoring efforts, expand data collection, and encourage broader public participation. The Society of Wildlife and Nature club envisions building an eco-friendly campus where biodiversity conservation becomes a shared public commitment.

Methodology and Implementation Steps

1. 生態教育與推廣：與通識課程結合生態導覽，探索中興湖生態與鴨鵝餵食問題，提升民眾環境意識。
2. 校園生態觀察與物種調查：觀察或記錄校內物種與水質，建立數據庫。
3. 綠川巡守隊：透過水質檢測、定期巡守與淨溪等行動維護校園周邊綠川環境。
4. 窗殺改善：於窗殺多的校園大樓增設窗貼，期望減少鳥類窗殺數量。

Innovation and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

透過夜觀、植辨、淨溪、新年數鳥、多元的社課與講座，深化校園生態教育並推廣。與社區、民間團體到政府，攜手合作讓生態保育理念深植人心。也秉持公民科學精神做生態調查，並嘗試如窗殺改善、外來魚種監測等更積極的行動。

1. 啟發生態保育意識：透過生態導覽讓民眾與學生認識生態重要性。
2. 提升公民科學參與度：透過監測與調查，引導參與者使用公民科學平台，共同參與生物多樣性監測。
3. 改善水質：宣導「不餵食」，讓民眾了解餵食對中興湖的影響，同時維護綠川，減緩污染，改善都市水域環境。
